National Threatened Species Day competiton

The well recognised Landcare hands remind us that care of the environment is our responsibility – it is in our hands. As the list of vulnerable and threatened species in our region grows, we need to work together much more effectively to restore and repair our environment. We also need to learn how to better share our environment with the animals and plants that were here long before us. We need to be Linking hands for life
.
Communities in Landscapes links up Landcare groups in our region with the Conservation Management Network and the Gould League to promote Linking hands for life. We encourage our Primary Schools to lead the way and work out ways for all of us to more effectively work together.
On September 7th 2011, we invite your class/school to spend time investigating what creatures in your area - the flora and fauna around Wagga Wagga and Orange - are vulnerable and under threat. On National Threatened Species Day spend some time helping our endangered species:
- Find out what species are under threat in your region.
- Identify what factors are leading to this threat.
- Consider what steps you, your school and your community can take to halt this threat.
- Develop a Recovery Action Plan for one of the threatened species in your area. What steps need to be taken to help protect them? Who do we need to tell about that problem? What do we need to encourage them to do?
- Join with your class mates and other classes in the school and show us how you are linking hands for life. How many children at your school can you get to link hands in a single chain?
- Take a photo of your school Linking hands for life.
- Upload the photo and your Recovery Action Plans to the Communities in Landscapes Schools Hub - lh4l@lnandcarensw.org.au. Each class participating in the Linking hands for life competition will receive a certificate acknowledging their role in the leading the way to help protect our threatened species.
When you upload your photo and Recovery Action Plans your school will then go in the running to win a very special prize – an evironmental workshop at your school and a copy of the Encyclopaedia of Australia Native Animals.
Use the resources in the Linking hands for life Schools Hub to research the threatened species in your area. You can link to other internet resources as well as download snapshots and fact sheets about different species.
