Native Seed Collection Workshop in Yass a hit!

Greening Australia Florabank

Communities in Landscapes

On December 14th 2010 Greening Australia's Florabank and Communities in Landscapes held a very successful community seed collection workshop in Yass, NSW.

With expert knowledge and advice from Stephen Bruce from Greening Australia, attendees learned how to collect, dry and store seed from different native species, as well as how to maximise the time different seed remains viable in storage.

Also covered on the day were the best sites to source seed from, how to maximise genetic diversity within collected samples, Best Practice measures for collecting seed whilst keeping the source site intact and healthy for generations to come, and standard protocols for collecting seed from public and private land as well as protected sites and threatened species.

The day concluded with some hands-on experience at Bookham cemetery, amidst dozens of flowering and seeding native forbs, grasses, shrubs and trees.

Similar workshops will be held in other locations on the Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Central West catchments in Autumn 2011 - for more information contact your regional Community Woodlands Officer.

Harp Trap

Rick Webster demonstrates the Harp Trap used
for catching bats

On Monday 13th December 2010 members of the Kyeamba Valley and Humula communities joined Communities in Landscapes staff and ecologist Rick Webster for an enjoyable and informative evening in the bush at Book Book Reserve.

A BBQ tea was followed by a sojourn amongst the trees, where Rick explained how to choose a suitable site for wildlife surveying and identified both the native plants and vital habitat elements present on the site.

A harp trap for humanely catching bats was erected on the site and once dark descended the party ventured further into the depths of the reserve, armed with torches and hand-held spotlights in search of nocturnal locals.

Small grants, big biodiversity benefit

Communities in Landscapes08 November 2010

Communities in Landscapes (CiL) has invited community groups in the Central West, Lachlan and Murrumbidgee catchments to apply for grants to boost biodiversity in their local area.

Industry & Investment NSW (I&I NSW) CiL project officer, Tony Cox, said grants up to $3000 (GST included) are available from CiL’s Community Small Grants Scheme.

“The aim of the project is to benefit the critically endangered box gum grassy woodland environments which sustain a variety of important native plant and animal species, “Mr Cox said.
